Vitafoods Europe 2026: Synergy Flavours taps into functional protein trends
Key takeaways
- Synergy Flavours will showcase functional, protein-enriched F&B concepts at Vitafoods Europe 2026, targeting healthy aging, energy boosts, women’s health, and GLP-1 companion products.
- A key trend for 2026 is the growing demand for protein in diets, with Synergy focusing on improving taste and texture in protein-enriched products like smoothies, protein coffee, and bars.
- The company will highlight concepts like high-protein beverages, gut-health sodas, and protein-packed puddings, designed to meet specific consumer needs like muscle support, satiety, and gut health.

Healthy aging is an increasingly important consideration for many consumers, including younger cohorts. However, according to Synergy Flavours, the F&B industry is failing to fully capitalize on the growing demand for functional products that support healthy aging and other wellness outcomes. Synergy is set to present concepts that help manufacturers realize the potential in protein-enriched F&B at Vitafoods Europe 2026 (May 5–7) in Barcelona, Spain.
The flavorings and taste modulation business will be exhibiting alongside its parent company, Carbery, a whey protein ingredient specialist. Synergy will present its flavor development technology and concepts for the proliferating healthy aging, energy boost, “Her Health,” and GLP-companion markets.
These concepts include a new blueberry and banana flavored smoothie, which blends Carbery’s Optipep hydrolyzed whey protein and Carbelac whey protein concentrate for muscle maintenance in conjunction with oats. Oats are naturally rich in fiber and provide a source of slow-release energy to support healthy aging in a popular beverage format.
Innova Market Insights identified “Powerhouse Protein” as its top industry trend for 2026, with nearly 60% of consumers globally saying they are actively incorporating more protein into their diets. Protein demands are growing for multiple reasons, from holistic health and muscle support to GLP-1 weight-loss medication balance. As Synergy recognizes, manufacturers need to optimize how they incorporate higher levels of protein into their products without compromising taste or texture.

Mainstreaming functional F&B
Synergy pinpoints energy as a key trend, with consumers increasingly recognizing the importance of controlled caffeine intake to reduce the impact of “energy crashes.” A range of protein coffees, available as hot and cold drinks, uses Carbery’s blends of whey proteins to provide a natural caffeine lift alongside a protein boost to support energy, focus, and overall wellness.
With “Her Health” also high on the agenda, Synergy will present a strawberry cheesecake-flavored bar, designed specifically to support women’s health. Fortified with Optipep hydrolyzed whey protein, Carbelac whey protein concentrate, and Isolac whey protein isolate, combined with a targeted blend of essential vitamins and minerals to maintain strength, muscle support, bone health, energy, and hormone regulation, the bar provides a convenient on-the-go format.
The company will also present a raspberry and passionfruit soda in Barcelona that specifically targets gut health. “Gut Health Hub” is Innova’s second-top trend of the year, with 59% of consumers globally saying they believe gut health is very important for the entire body. Synergy’s beverage concept is high in fiber to support digestive health, and contains no added sweeteners, colorings, or acids, instead using fruit juices and taste modulation technology to provide sweetness.

GLP-1 companion products
The continued growth of GLP-1s and awareness of the associated side effects present a strong opportunity for companion F&B products to lend satiety and increase protein intake, as well as manage the changed taste perception issues reported by some GLP-1 users.
Synergy will showcase a GLP-1 companion drink concept, featuring whey proteins, vitamins, and minerals, at Vitafoods Europe 2026. The beverage supports muscle maintenance and satiety, and will be shown in elderflower, lime, and mint flavors for premium appeal. The company’s high-protein, high-fiber, low-fat chocolate pudding, containing a blend of vitamins and minerals, will also be presented.
Chris Whiting, business development manager for Nutrition at Synergy Flavours, says: “The global appetite for protein-enriched food and drink products is accelerating, and consumers across all sectors expect an enhanced eating and drinking experience that moves far beyond the chalky texture and flavor compromises once associated with protein fortification.”
“As consumers become more sophisticated in their nutritional needs, they are targeting health and wellness in different ways — some consumers are more aware of targeting specific nutrients for healthy aging, for example, while GLP-1 users are making big dietary changes to maintain a balanced diet while using the medication. Being able to predict consumer trends and offer products that meet these specific demographics’ needs is key to successful new product development.”
“Working closely with Carbery means we combine its heritage in premium whey protein ingredients with our expertise in taste modulation technology to deliver high functionality in a great-tasting product.”
