Univar Solutions teamed up with global partners Ingredion and Novonesis at Fi Europe 2024 in Frankfurt, Germany, showcasing solutions from its nutritionally optimized portfolio. Danielle Mailey, technical sales manager at Univar Solutions, explains how the company is targeting improved health outcomes through protein and fiber enrichment, fat and sugar reduction and natural flavor enhancements in applications like plant-based alternatives, yogurts and snacks.

Food and 2024 in Frankfurt, Germany.

We're here at the Foodology by Univar Solutions stand with Daniel Mali, who is technical sales.

Welcome to you.

Thank you very much.

So what are you showcasing today?

We're showcasing a wide range of products.

We're working here on the stand together with Ingredient and Novenices, who are our global partners.

We're also showcasing a lot from our other partners as , like Terrios, Calsec.

Yeah, so it's plant-based sausage.

We're doing high protein yogurts.

We're doing fresh keeping and bread.

We're showing some nutritional optimization in snacks, but what we're also showing as , some sugar reduction and flavor improvements would be really important to us in our portfolio.

That's really interesting.

And what would you say are some of the main industry and consumer trends you're looking to tap into with these solutions?

So nutritional optimization has always been a really key thing for us.

Our portfolio is very strong.

Comes to protein enrichment, fiber enrichment, fat reduction, sugar reduction.

So some of the things that we're doing today from ingredients range, for example, is showcasing our natural flavorings which improve flavor, can cost reduce and also reduce sugar.

Then using our Novenais biosolutions, we are able to take out methyl cellulose and plant-based meats.

We have oat milk using enzymes to improve sweetness in oat milk, but yeah, nutritional.

And then also improving taste and texture.

And as you know, in addition to nutrition, consumers are increasingly concerned by planetary health.

In what ways are you looking to enhance the eco-friendliness of your solutions?

So we have sustainability is key for us, improving those carbon numbers now.

We will see that people will be putting carbon on front of pack just like they would nutritional.

So it's a real key focus for us using some of our proteins.

We can do that because they're from a sustainable source.

And also our biosolutions from Novannis as.

They're processing aids.

They're natural.

So yeah, putting those two together, which is what Foodology does, really supports our customers in their sustainability journeys.

OK, what would you say are some of the main challenges you face as a company as you look to make these increasingly nutritious and sustainable solutions?

I suppose it's always cost, you know.

Yes, we can give people clean label solutions.

We can help them on their journey, but you know.

A concern for our customers is always cost, and these things do come with a price.

So for example, taking out some gum, some E numbers, and going with our biosolutions, our enzymes, our proteins will implement some costs.

So what we do with our solution centers and people like myself, our technical sales, is we will work directly with the customer and reformulation and just try and keep the cost down.

But I would say that that is a major concern when we're going down the clean label route.

That's brilliant, thanks for your time today.

OK, thank you very much for having me.
