ADM expands global portfolio into premium chocolate

09 Dec 2019 | ADM Wild

What kind of flavors in chocolate are consumers seeking around the world? Bastian Hörmann, Senior Project Manager Food, WFSI, ADM Nutrition, shares the global trends ADM has seen exemplified in four chocolate pralines. Acquisitions in vanilla and citrus oils has further boosted ADM’s portfolio in confectionery.

This is Missy Green at FI Europe 2019.

I'm here with Bastian Hermann, who's going to tell us a little bit about new developments at ATM.

Welcome, Bastian.

Hi Missy, nice to have you here on the booth.

Thank you.

So I got some questions for you about ADM.

Could you tell us about some of your new refinement innovations for chocolate, and what trend do they tap into?

That's a very interesting question.

So we have really new developments with us.

We made a lot of acquisitions in recent months and years, and have an encompassing portfolio for the chocolate.

That space so we're known in the beverage segment I guess but as we have all the the ingredients and also the solutions for the chocolate space we really see a trend here for the premiumization so with our ingredients we yeah we enable our customers to really innovate in that space to enhance the chocolate.

Beside really the chocolate itself with more ingredients to vary in texture, vary in in in taste directions, and also get some flavor in of course to keep the consumer really active and and trying new varieties, trying new chocolate ingredients also what we bought today is a a greetings from ADM chocolate concept so we developed for reannaise with our.

Ingredients and enhance them with some taste varieties from our main I would say main regions where we are active in so the North American space, the Latin space MEIE for example where we are at the moment and Asia Pacific so everywhere we did some consumer research on how to tap into trends and flavor directions and then we created that bolognaise to to give a global scale.

Of our capabilities, but also to give a global scale on the taste which is out there.

It's very interesting.

Did you find that different regions of the world prefer different hybrid flavor combinations?

Oh yeah, definitely, definitely, especially when we saw that the North American markets, the consumers really tapping into blurring categories.

So there's a lot of taste varieties and.

Getting cake styled tastes into chocolate, for example, like a lemon cheesecake, that's a that's a classic I would say, but also new ones like a a Florida key lime pie, brin, and that's a very interesting concept variety because you can use a white chocolate base you can enhance that with flavor, you have the fat cream as a filling and you can also enhance that with a food filling, to give a.

A texture and a bite like a a small piece of cake, but in a chocolate for for for all the chocolate lovers out there and on the other side when we look at Asia Pacific for example here we see a lot more trends in the beverage space, so coming from the coffee chains globally active, and we have coffee varieties from Vietnam enhanced with spices from the Asian regions.

So we have a very gi spiced boin with us which have a great coffee extract which they are producing in Germany.

And this is creating a boulin which is really, really keen to taste as a Asia variety in coffee plus chai spice, in a boulin with dark chocolate, around.

So there's a lot going on happening at ADM.

Oh yeah, of course.

What sort of acquisitions have you had recently?

Can you tell us a little bit about that?

So what we saw and what we did as ADM is really moving from a supplier for the whole industry to really create a value for the consumer, and what we see there is to enhance our portfolio, not only for our customers, but for the consumers out there.

So what we did this year is, we bought Rotel Vanilla, , which is a joint venture, to enhance our capabilities in the vanilla space because in the sweet food segments and then also the beverage segments where we are active in, we need a sustainable vanilla sauce, this is what we accomplished now and enhanced our portfolio with, and on the other side what we did is, we, we bought the Siler.

Company which is the global expert in citrus oils, so the fractions for the citrus flavors, and this is now part of our portfolio and we leverage that capability for all of our solutions in the food and beverage markets and to give our customers also the ability to have all the varieties they need and all the different quality.

Yeah, the, the qualities they need to develop new beverages and new food ingredients.

So now you can make more key lime pie, for example, and that's a really good example because in that key lime pie, brin, also one oil out of that new portfolio is inside.

So you're also able to taste, of course, our flavors with that portfolio and the whole encompassing portfolio of ADM.

Thank you so much.

Thank you.
