Dairy industry insights: Tirlán discusses its vision for navigating future trends
05 Dec 2023 | Tirlán
Live at Fi Europe in Frankfurt, Germany, we speak with John O’Donnell, the head of the dairy ingredient category at Tirlán, about the company’s latest dairy innovations and the market trends its offerings speak to. O’Donnell looks at three main trends in the dairy and dairy protein space and details what trends it thinks will dominate the markets in 2024 and how Tirlán plans to meet coming consumer and customer demands.
Hello everybody.
This is William Bradford Nichols live at Food Ingredients Europe in Frankfurt, Germany, and I'm speaking with John O'Donnell, the head of the dairy ingredient category at Tin.
Hello sir, how are you today?
Hello, how are you doing?
Good to have you here.
We're excited to talk to you today.
I've got some questions.
If it's OK, I'll just start.
All right, can you tell us about the products and innovations you're showcasing this year and what the reception has been so far?
Absolutely.
So one of the big important things for us this year has been the demand for our.
Nutritional and functional dairy proteins.
So our Promiko whey protein isolate, which we launched earlier this year, and our Salmiko and Salago brands and milk proteins, that's what we're seeing a big demand for this year has been exceptional, and we expect that based on what we've seen this week to continue into 24.
What specific trends and markets do these offerings speak to right now?
Yeah, so.
Especially we're talking about health and wellness, so a global trend in health and wellness that we've seen for the last number of years coming out of COVID is continuing.
Specifically within that, the nutritional quality of dairy proteins has been more and more recognized by our consumers, and we're seeing better nutrition in snacking foods, so more protein fortification in the likes of bars, beverages, but also everyday products.
What are Terlan's main objectives and goals of this year's trade show?
So a show like this is important for us as we bring the Terlon name to life.
So Terlon is a new name in the industry.
We're trying to build on the brand recognition that we had for so many years being part of the Glanbia family, and now it's important for us to try and reach out to as many customers and new customers as we can at a trade show like this and bring Tier lawn to life for them.
What trends in consumer demands do you expect will dominate in the coming year, and how is Tierlin, like you said, a newer company that's showing its face now and coming alive for the consumer and the customer, how do you plan on meeting those demands?
Sure, so I'll talk about three trends, right?
One is the health and wellness, and we spoke about how our proteins are.
Becoming more and more important in everyday foods, and snacking, in beverages, in bars, and in all kinds of products.
The second trend that we see is that plant is set to continue, right, so you're going to see more from us in terms of our outstanding plant ingredients next year as we see plants, the growth that we've seen in the plants continuing.
24 and 25, and the most important one for us, of course, is sustainability.
So at Tier lawn we are very committed to being the leading dairy co op in terms of sustainable farming.
That's Ter lawn.
That's our farmers.
We bring that to life through our living proof strategy.
And that's maybe the most important trend that we're going to see next year.
And speaking of next year.
What can we expect from Terlin in 2024 and what else can we expect?
No, so good.
So Terlo, it's a big year for us next year.
We're opening our new cheese plant in spring.
That's a joint venture with our partners in Aware.
So we'll have cheese and whey coming on stream in February and March.
We expect demand to continue for our Ched Max functional cheese products, so.
Cheese snacking and putting functional cheese into everyday products like like like pizzas, like ready meals, it's it's important.
It's growing and we're seeing more and more demand for that in the Asia markets.
We're going to bring, like I said, new outstanding products to market, so our oat-based ingredients.
We've got a very strong pipeline coming on and as I said at the start, we definitely see continued extraordinary demand for the high protein dairy products that are going into fortified foods and healthy snacking.
John, thank you so much for talking to us today and sharing your insights.
I hope you have a great rest of the show and we look forward to hearing more from children in the future.
Thanks.
You're very welcome.
