Lacprodan ISO.Water is positioned as the first flavorless protein water, which has also been optimized for taste and mouthfeel. With the unique formulation, Joe Katterfield, Sales Development Manager for Sports Nutrition and Health Foods at Arla Foods Ingredients, says the mass market is ready to embrace protein water. At Fi Europe 2019 in Paris, France, event attendees could sample the protein water, with or without watermelon flavoring, to demonstrate its potential as a refreshing drink for the everyday consumer.
This is Missy Green here at FI Europe 2019 in Paris, and I'm here with Joe Ketterfield from Arla Food Ingredients, who's going to tell us a little bit about the new Lac Podan Isoater.
So Joe, this water, Isoater, was just launched here at FIE.
What's the innovation here?
Yeah, so ice water, it's a new whey protein isolate designed especially for protein waters, and what we've done is we've optimized the taste profile, and now we've eliminated the taste of protein that can traditionally be found in protein waters.
So basically manufacturers can get a much better tasting product and it's er really exciting.
Wow, so the taste is gone.
What does that mean for your target markets?
What we've found traditionally is, is protein water has been on the market er within Western Europe and North America especially in the past decade, but there's always been a, a limiting factor that this has been a slight dryness in the mouth, and this has really prevented some of these products from going more mainstream.
So now we believe that as the taste has been optimized, the product is ready for these more mass market brands and it can be er really much more wide reaching.
So where do you see this fitting in as an end product?
So basically it's, it's an ingredient that's added to water, er and then you can get a, a range of protein levels within in the drink, and it really fit perfectly into this functional beverage space as as more of a sport nutrition er sector.
OK, like you see vitamin water or there's other sorts of waters.
Yeah, so these waters where where consumers want more of a health benefit, but also refreshment, so now they can get a nice tasting drink that also has a very high amount of protein potentially, and this would really serve those needs because traditionally, it's been very hard to add protein to a beverage and have a refreshing drink.
Yeah, so that raises the question, what's in it?
It's very simple, so we take water, we add our protein ingredient, and then we just need to add a little bit of flavoring and, and sweetener, and then you get a very simple, protein water product, so it's a very low list of ingredients, but it's a really powerful, great tasting product, we have a prototype here, so this is, this is one of our watermelon flavors, you can see it's a very clear drink, there's also a potential to add colorings if you wanted to make it more and more colored, but , yeah, it's a really, It looks like a water, it tastes like a water, and that's more, what more can you need?
So, so what are the, the last concluding remarks you can say that really separates us from other protein waters?
So again, it comes down to this taste factor.
So, so there is many protein water products on the market, there's many protein water ingredients, but most of them will have, or all of them to date will have this, this problem with dryness in the mouth.
So when, when the part is consumed, there's a.
A dry mouth feel, so it's really hard to make a refreshing drink with protein ingredients.
But now that we've solved this issue, it's actually possible to make a refreshing drink and really market this to consumers and we really believe they'll enjoy it.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
