New Probiotic Solution for Infant Nutrition

13 Jun 2016 | DuPont

DuPont launched their HOWARU Protect EarlyLife probiotic at VitaFoods Europe 2016 as part of its premium ingredient range. The new, clinically tested probiotic has been demonstrated to support the development of long-lasting immune health benefits in infants. HOWARU Protect EarlyLife contains the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001TM, and has been formulated specifically for expectant mothers and their infants.

It's wires at the Vita Foods in Geneva and I'm here with Alvin Ivara from DuPont and DuPont are highlighting how you protect early life probiotic.

Alvin, what is this ingredient and how can it be used?

This is a very novel ingredient.

We did a large research in New Zealand where we start giving.

The probiotic to the mothers, expectant mothers, during the last trimester of the pregnancy, and then we also gave the probiotic to the newborns up to 6 months up to 2 years, and the mothers were having the probiotic during the 1st 6 months after pregnancy.

And the product is intended to reduce the incidence of eczema.

So in fact, it induces a balance in the immune system and therefore reducing, you know, prevalence of allergy, eczemas, and other associated, you know, syndromes to the Unbalanced immune system.

What were the results of the study?

The results were great.

First of all.

We observed a reduction by 50% of the incidence in eczema and also we observed a very important reduction in the other parameters that we check for allergy.

You know, related unbalanced immune system parameters.

You're presenting some concepts here where you've adopted the ingredient.

Can you explain a bit about what these products are?

Yes, of course.

This is the product that we developed.

This is a.

Concept with 6 billion colony forming units per s.

So this is the amount that mothers and newborns were taking during the study.

But of course this is just an example of how the product can be.

Commercialized during the study, the mothers were having these kind of sachets, and they were mixing it with the food and consuming and also in capsules, and then you can put these kind of products, for instance, in baby formula, in infant formula, and that's in fact the way that children were receiving the product.

So that's where you expect the biggest potential for this ingredient.

Using it in infant formula.

Yes, in infant formula, because that's the easiest way to deliver this.

When can we expect it to be commercialized?

The product is already, already has been launched in some markets.

It's a very new product for the market in the US.

There are some companies that are already adding it to infant formula.

OK, Alvin, thank you very much.

You're very welcome.
