We speak to Annelies van Oosterom, business development manager at Kiwa, a certification company at Anuga 2025. She discussed how compliance through integrated certification and local expertise can help businesses meet evolving standards that meet consumer and manufacturer demands.
Hello and welcome.
I'm at Anuga 2025 speaking to Anele, the business development manager at Kiva.
Thanks for having us.
Could you tell us a bit about what does Kiva do?
Yeah, Kiva is a testing, inspection and certification body, and we're founded since 1948.
And we do the business that serves in many different sectors, and I am working for the Food, Feed and agriculture.
Business sector.
Great.
And what makes Cuba different to other similar certification companies?
There are several things that make Cuba different.
One of the things is that we are a one-stop shop for services like inspection and certification.
We do a wide range of certification schemes that we can offer to our customers.
And another thing that sets Us apart is that we are globally available, but we have local people helping and serving our customers, so that's a direct way of communication in your own country.
Interesting.
So which countries and regions are those?
We operate a lot in China, Australia, so let's say Asia, but we are also represented in many countries in Europe, the US, Latin America.
What else?
Yeah, I think that covers the regions in the world.
Yeah.
And do youste any common trends in sustain any kinds of regulations when it comes to food ingredients globally, but also that are there many differences, for example, depending on the region?
Yeah, we spot a lot of trends nowadays, of course, sustainability is one of them.
We have the EUDR going on in Europe, so that's something that we are on top of because certification can help you be ready for the EU law.
That's one thing.
But if you talk about a topic which is challenging globally is animal welfare, for example, because regulations vary, but also.
Cultures vary in animal welfare.
So what we would like to see is, of course, one known brand when it comes to certification, but applicable worldwide, but also adjusted worldwide according to the local, the local needs.
Let's say it like that.
OK, so can you expand a little bit more on that?
How do you being this global certificate.
Currently it's the situation that there are several animal welfare certification schemes depending on the region, so I can name a few.
But for example, you have one in Spain and you have one very known one in, but there's a different one in the north.
But how can the customer recognize that this is for animal welfare, and that's a challenge because it would be best if you just have one set of requirements and one recognizable brand for a product that is according to an animal welfare standard certified.
And is that achievable?
Do you see it happening anytime soon?
I don't think it's achievable tomorrow, but I hope it will be in the future.
I hope we can make life easy by combining our strengths on that topic.
Interesting.
And since we are in Germany today, do you see companies struggling to meet certain German regulations or in broader European regulations?
That's not my expertise, so that's a little bit difficult for me to.
To answer that question and in general, any challenges you've seen your clients kind of making similar mistakes, maybe trying to trying to meet the local regulations.
What is, I think what I hear from our customers, what is the most challenge is to keep up with the regulations actually.
How do I know what is the latest update of the regulations today, because the regulations can be found.
In so many different places in so many different areas.
So what is it that I need to do today and how can I keep myself updated in an easy way?
I think that's the most difficult challenge.
Is there anything else you would like to say on the topic, especially maybe something to do with Anuga in particular or any trends you're spotting at Annuga right now?
I think Amiga is a great fair because it, it combines the best of all countries in one place.
I see very innovative products represented here and of course it's a great way to connect with each other.
