Under a Yellow Sun, a Wine Called Pink Umbrella From Blue Moon Marketing is Having a Great Success

15/06/06 A new, light and delicious rose wine called Pink Umbrella, is setting a colorful tone and selling strongly in markets all over the United States.
Pink Umbrella, for all the fun in its name, is a serious wine, a Vin Gris, just slightly sweet with a crisp acidity, which gives the wine a lively and refreshing finish, perfect for summer sipping. It is made from excellent Lodi-grown Pinot Grigio grapes. The light-hearted packaging features a young woman, dressed in pink, holding a pink umbrella. Suggested price is just $9.99.
A companion wine is Grey Rose "Pinot Pinot," a fully dry rose, again Pinot Grigio based, but with a little Pinot Noir from Sonoma County. Thus the two "Pinots" in the name. Suggested retail price for this wine is $12.99.
The wines are the brainchild of Anthony Scotto, president of Blue Moon Marketing, and a fourth generation wine man. "Sales are very strong," he says. "A large group of wine consumers are always looking for the "newest" thing in wine, providing that the quality, packaging price, and of course, taste, are right. Pinot Grigio sales, both from Italy and from California, are having a great success in the United States. Now, with these wines, we are taking Pinot Grigio up several notches in taste, color and attractiveness. Pink Umbrella and Grey Rose Pinot Pinot appeal to two different segments of the market."
Advising on marketing and distribution is John McClelland, formerly president of Geyser Peak Winery and past chairman of Wine Institute, who was recently honored by this organization. Cindy Gander created both labels. Case production is 10,000 cases for each wine.
