Giant Companies Committed to Give European Consumers Better Information on Their Products' Fat and Sugar Contents
According to the companies, by the end of the year they already plan to start rolling out the new packaging.
13/07/06 World’s top food and beverage manufacturers are now committed to supply better information on packaging about their products’ fat and sugar contents to European consumers.
Coca-Cola Co., Groupe Danone, Kellogg Co., Kraft Foods Inc., Nestle SA, PepsiCo Inc. and Unilever NV said they will slap at-a-glance calorie content information on the front of their packaging with further detailed lists of nutrient such as including sugars, fat, salt and carbohydrate, at the back. This is a move to stem the growing problem of obesity in Europe. Amounts of fat and sugar per serving and recommended daily amounts are the information included.
This action is part of a voluntary industry-wide scheme set up by the confederation of food and beverage industries, CIAA, as part of a European Union anti-obesity drive. According to the companies, by the end of the year they already plan to start rolling out the new packaging.
