EFSA Meeting of National Experts on Bisphenol A
EFSA is promoting dialogue with its national and international partners on this issue to ensure that European-level advice is based upon the most up-to-date and reliable information possible.
26 Mar 2010 --- The European Food Safety Authority is bringing together national experts from the EU Member States at a meeting in Parma on Friday 26 March to discuss EFSA’s ongoing scientific work on bisphenol A (BPA).
EFSA is promoting dialogue with its national and international partners on this issue to ensure that European-level advice is based upon the most up-to-date and reliable information possible.
At the meeting, EFSA will outline the draft opinion on BPA which is currently being prepared by its scientific Panel on food contact materials (CEF Panel). It will also present the initial findings of a review of recent scientific literature in this area. Following discussion with the national experts, both of these outputs are due to be finalised by the CEF Panel at its next plenary meeting in late May.
The meeting will allow all EU Member States to exchange views and contribute any relevant information on recent or on-going assessments of BPA. Members of EFSA’s Advisory Forum were asked to nominate national experts to take part in the meeting alongside members of the CEF Panel's working group on BPA.
EFSA published scientific opinions on BPA in January 2007 and July 2008. In October 2009, EFSA received a further request from the European Commission to assess the relevance of a new study on possible neurodevelopmental effects of BPA. EFSA was also asked to assess any other new scientific evidence which may have an impact on its previous risk assessments on BPA.
