Key takeaways
- Döhler Australia has agreed to acquire Ezy Chef to enhance innovation in culinary solutions and ready-to-eat formats.
- The acquisition will strengthen Döhler’s presence in Australia’s foodservice market amid rising demand for convenient, high-quality food options.
- Döhler aims to leverage Ezy Chef’s expertise to meet consumer demand for healthier and functional foods, while boosting supply chain resilience in the country.

Döhler Australia has agreed to acquire culinary ingredients firm Ezy Chef, significantly expanding Döhler’s capabilities in savory applications and ready-to-eat formats and strengthening its manufacturing footprint in Australia.
The deal combines Melbourne-based Ezy Chef’s advanced culinary solutions, like customized sauces and ready-to-eat meals for foodservice, with Döhler’s global innovation platform and portfolio of natural ingredients, including flavors, colors, and health ingredients.
Döhler’s advancements in natural ingredients align with Innova Market Insights’ research on Australian food trends, which finds that consumers’ evolving lifestyles show a strong preference for authenticity, including real and natural ingredients. Over 50% of local consumers prioritize taste and cost, with a preference for real ingredients, no artificial flavors or colors, and locally sourced products.

Döhler’s focus on localization and enhancing supply chain resilience in Australia is the key factor behind the move to expand its culinary offerings, Peter Gates, managing director of Döhler ANZ, tells Food Ingredients First.
“The Australian culinary market reflects a rich diversity of cultural influences driven by global immigration. In this context, Döhler Australia provides a comprehensive suite of ingredients and solutions particularly relevant for culinary applications — spanning preparations, purées, juices, flavors, colors, botanical extracts, emulsions, and culinary inclusions.”
Döhler can address the supply chain challenges and innovation pressures in Australia’s food industry with its local manufacturing and integrated solutions, says Gates.“By integrating global expertise with local production capabilities, Döhler offers Australian manufacturers a reliable and innovation-driven platform.”
The acquisition also strengthens Döhler’s position as a “subject matter expert in texture-modified foods,” supported by collaborations with universities and the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organization in Australia, Gates adds.
The deal — financial terms of which have not been disclosed — is scheduled to take effect on April 1, when Döhler will formally assume ownership and begin consolidating its current Heidelberg operations into Ezy Chef’s Broadmeadows facility.
Inside Australia’s F&B preferences
The Australian ready-to-eat food market is experiencing a surge in demand for convenience and healthier meal options, Gates tells us. He highlights key trends in the country, such as an increased demand for plant-based and alternative proteins, with rising adoption of vegan, vegetarian, and flexitarian diets.
There is also a “growing preference for healthier alternatives, such as organic, low-calorie, and gluten-free food ingredients. Consumers are shifting to eco-friendly packaging and sustainably sourced ingredients,” he says.
Rising interest in ethnic cuisines and gourmet ready meals is also driving culinary innovations.
The Ezy Chef acquisition is expected to advance Döhler’s savory food innovations in the country. Ezy Chef, established in 2008, has an expertise as a “Heat & Serve solution provider for the foodservice and healthcare sectors, with a strong portfolio including soups, fruit toppings, and fruit coulis,” says Gates.
“Through its integration into Döhler’s broader system, this culinary development and ready-to-eat expertise significantly strengthens capabilities in savory applications.”
Innova data says more than 50% of Australian consumers prioritize taste and cost and prefer real ingredients without artificial flavors or colors in foods. The combined offering will help the companies extend the ability to deliver customized product solutions for foodservice operators and manufacturers, while expanding the portfolio across liquid, dry, and culinary formats.
Local ingredients and transparency demands
With Döhler’s global reach, the 100% Australian-sourced products manufactured at Ezy Chef offer a “strong local alternative to imported solutions,” which Gates says will support both supply security and regional value creation.
“Döhler’s R&D expertise will continue to drive innovation in texture modification solutions, particularly for the foodservice industry.”
Australia’s foodservice sector presents a significant multi‑billion‑dollar opportunity to manufacturers, with industry projections by IMARC Group suggesting the market could reach US$130.4 billion by 2034, exhibiting a 4.07% CAGR between 2026–2034.
Gates also expects the combination of local sourcing and advanced development capabilities to create significant opportunities to deliver customized food solutions to meet consumers’ clean label, high-quality, and functional product expectations.
“A large majority of the texture-modified Australian vegetables and fruits produced at Ezy Chef are inherently clean label, being 100% pure with no additives or preservatives,” he says.
The business deal will help enhance the capacity to integrate natural ingredients, flavors, and functional systems into “ready-to-eat applications, supporting the growing demand for products that deliver both transparency and performance.”
Overcoming supply chain hurdles
A 2025 USDA report on Australia’s food processing ingredients found that high inflation and living costs have constrained the country’s consumer foodservice industry. Consumers are cutting discretionary spending and favoring cheaper, limited-service options like fast food.
“In the Australian market, manufacturers are navigating supply chain instability, increasing pressure to innovate faster while managing cost and complexity, and the need to ensure consistent quality at scale,” Gates explains.
Ezy Chef, founded in 2008, specializes in “Heat & Serve” solutions for foodservice and healthcare, including soups, fruit toppings, and coulis.“At the same time, there is a growing reliance on partners who can deliver integrated solutions rather than just raw materials. By combining local manufacturing capabilities with comprehensive expertise, Döhler is well-positioned to address these challenges and support the evolving needs of the industry.”
Döhler’s plans for Ezy Chef
Döhler, which showcased its advanced ingredients systems in China last week, already has manufacturing locations in northern and southern Australia. The Ezy Chef acquisition is set to offer supply flexibility and closer collaboration with customers throughout the region.
“Following the acquisition, the focus is on maximizing the existing infrastructure at the Ezy Chef site, which is currently operating at around 30% capacity,” says Gates.
“By ramping up production and leveraging the available facilities, Döhler aims to significantly expand local manufacturing capabilities. This will accelerate product development by combining culinary expertise with Döhler’s ingredient know-how, while strengthening the site’s role as a hub for innovation and export-ready solutions serving the markets in Australia and New Zealand.”
