Coca-Cola plans to introduce anti-cholesterol drink
Seeks permission to add phytosterol to a range of fruit juices.
01/03/05 Coca-Cola plans to produce a cholesterol-reducing health drink. The company has applied for permission to add phytosterol, a natural plant extract, to a range of fruit juices.
Already found in margarines such as Benecol and Flora pro-activ, as well as milk drinks and yoghurts, phytosterol can block the body’s absorption of LDL, the form of cholesterol associated with heart disease and high blood pressure.
The move is regarded as Coca-Cola’s response to mounting concerns about obesity, which have seen the popularity of its fizzy drinks decline in recent years.
