1 Jun 2010 --- C&D Foods, the Longford, Ireland-based pet food maker, has expanded into Europe with the purchase of a production facility from Nestle in The Netherlands.
Located at Ijmuiden Port, close to Amsterdam, the factory is a fully integrated canning facility capable of producing 100,000 tonnes of pet food a year. It was previously used for the production of Purina pet foods.
C&D is to invest €2.5m in new plant and technology for the site as part of its plan to upgrade the factory.
84 production and management personnel will work on the site and almost all of the support and administration functions will be managed from the C&D base in Edgeworthstown, Co Longford.
'The purchase of this canning plant consolidates our market position in Ireland and the UK, and further develops our business in mainland Europe. It is of particular significance that we can now return to manufacturing canned pet food after fire destroyed our Longford canning facility in 2006', said managing director Philip Reynolds.
C&D Foods is the largest supplier of own-label pet food products to the Irish and UK markets. It has a turnover in more than €100m and employs 250 people in Ireland and a further 90 people at the UK plant.
