Average Basket Prices of Unilever Products up 5.7 Percent Since Brexit
07 Nov 2016 --- The price of a basket of 20 Unilever products in the UK has risen by an average of 5.7 percent across the country's major supermarkets since the Brexit vote, according to research. The research has been complied by the Guardian newspaper and MySupermarket.com, the price comparison site.
It reveals price volatility since the vote with well-known brands such as Bertolli spread rising 31.5 percent. Other Unilever brands showing a price increase include VO5 styling mousse, up nearly 15 percent, Bovril up 0.6 percent, Comfort Pure Fabric Conditioner, up 9.9 percent, and Elmlea Double Cream up 3.2 percent.
Overall, there was a rise in 16 Unilever products out of 20, but others such as Pot Noodle, down 13.1 percent, and Marmite, down 0.8 percent have fallen in price in the major supermarkets since the Brexit vote.
Sainsbury's was found to be the most expensive supermarket, with the products totalling £40.26 ($49.88) while Asda was the cheapest at £37.90 ($46.95), both up month-on-month.
The fall in value in sterling since the referendum has already led to a spat between Unilever and Tesco over price after it emerged that Unilever had demanded a 10 percent price rise of its brands across the board, stopping deliveries to Tesco and leaving it low on items such as Pot Noodle.
