Emmi Moves to 100% Renewable Hydroelectricity
28 Sep 2016 --- Emmi is to switch to using hydroelectricity to power its entire operations in Switzerland, as it underscores its commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 25 percent by 2020.
The Swiss milk processor and dairy processor said the switch will mean that it will cut its annual CO2 emission by 14000 tonnes a year.
The moves comes as the food and drinks industry looks to position their businesses as increasingly environmentally friendly, including by using more renewable energy.
It is teaming up with energy company BKW which will supply Emmi with around 110 gigawatt hours of hydroelectricity a year.
BKW already provides electricity for a number of Emmi facilities and this will now be increased across all 36 of Emmi's Swiss facilities from 2017.
Max Peter, Head of Retail and Supply Chain Management Switzerland at Emmi, says: “With its innovative and flexible procurement model, BKW will enable us to optimally satisfy our electricity requirements as well as take an important step towards meeting our CO2 reduction targets.”
Christoph Matter, Head of Sales at BKW, adds: “We are delighted to be able to supply an important customer in Emmi with sustainable hydroelectricity throughout Switzerland.”
