Alland & Robert unveils Beyond Acacia with 51% less emissions and increased functionality

05 Dec 2023 | Alland & Robert

A new processing facility in Normandy has enabled French acacia supplier Alland & Robert to manufacture a purified, spray-dried acacia gum with a lower carbon footprint. Under the name “Beyond Acacia,” the granulated product has been fully optimized for improved solubility and dispersibility in water. Violaine Fauvarque, sustainability manager, and Isabelle Jaouen, R&D director, explain how brands can benefit from reduced energy use and packaging using the fine and dense format.

This is Missy Green at FIE 2023.

I'm here with Doctor Isabel Jiawen, who is the R&D director of Alan and Robert, as as Violen Bobart, who is a sustainability manager.

So Alain and Robert has launched a new line of products, and tell us a little bit about them first, Doctor Isabel.

Thank you, Missy.

Yes, Alan and Robert decided to launch and build a new facility, with.

In order to produce acacia gum purified, obviously, and we decided to implement an innovative technology in our plant in order to be able to propose a new form of Acacia gum naturally spray dried, naturally instant soluble form, but more granulated form in order to propose new performing acacia gum to our customers.

This is a whole new manufacturing facility as.

Yes, it's a new manufacturing facility but located at the same place in Normandy, and with this new process we will produce a gum that will that will present high disposability in water, high ability for the dispersion in water, and.

This gum will present superior quality for the users.

The users will save energy and time when they will use this new form of cache gum.

So what are some of the main applications that we use or that would need like a higher quality acacia gum?

Any kind of application will will be OK with using this new form of acacia gum.

We will decline this new quality on every regular and usual.

Quality we already proposed to all our customers.

The difference will be an easier dispersion, dispersion, easier use of the gum, and, obviously energy reduced costs thanks to the the the new advantages of this gum.

OK, so you have reduced energy and then are you also able to pass that along to your customers?

Who can then reduce their carbon footprint.

Yes, we will reduce and they will reduce as because they will heat less the solution.

Our gum will be perfectly soluble at cold temperature.

They will have less foam, so less rest time, so they will accelerate their processes as.

How does the price comparison differ because this sounds like now it's a premium product.

It's a premium product, and I cannot speak about prices, but the prices will be, very, very similar and sometimes identical depending, on the applications.

Very good.

Vio then, did you want to speak more about the sustainability aspect?

Yes, thank you.

So this range is called Beyond Acacia because it's we've worked on going beyond just providing acacia.

We want to really have a commitment to environmental exemplarity, so we've worked on improving.

Our energy performance during the manufacturing process and now we are committed to a gumacacia that has a decrease in the carbon footprint of -51% compared to standard gummacacia for scopes 1 and 2.

And for the third scope we have a decrease in emissions of 13%.

So we have really reduced the carbon footprint of Gumakesha to the very minimum.

And in addition to this work that we are doing, we have other initiatives like our corporate foundation with the deforestation initiatives, and we are members of many different initiatives to help improve our environmental performance.

How does this compare to other acacia gum that's out there on the market?

The, the, the huge difference is really the manufacturing process that's really optimized to save energy in our facility and for our customers.

So we have a double approach for energy saving.

And I would say that thanks to packaging reduction due to the high density of the product, they will also save money with a low storage, less storage.

OK, interesting.
