Naturalness, clean-label, and functionality drive plant-based NPD

10 Oct 2019 --- Nadine Salhani of Doehler highlights at Anuga 2019 some of the key sub-trends within the wider plant-based movement, such as naturalness, clean-label, plus-minus claims and functionality. Regarding customer demand, the volume is low compared to dairy, but the CAGR is growing in double-digits. In some countries and regions, dairy is declining as a category as plant-based moves forward, she explains. “I’m confident that it’s here to stay,” she concludes.

Trending beverage concepts

01 Jul 2019 --- Doehler presented various on trend beverage concepts that triumph on a clean label platform. Varieties on display included a Lemongrass Green Tea, a Black Tea With a Hint of Honey, a Tart Cherry Guayusa Natural Energy Drink and an Apple Spice Rooibos Tea. Some of the trends that we are seeing are around cleaner label where people are really examining a lot of the ingredients that are on the back of a bottle or a menu and asking themselves ‘what is in a natural flavor?’ for example. So we are looking at ingredients that are made from the named fruit or for more extracts, infusions. We are also seeing a bigger demand for lower calorie and reduced calorie, as the amount of sugar that people want in their beverages seems to be dropping,” says Jeff Underwood at Doehler.
