Wild Flavors Launches SaltTrim in Europe
A resident in the western developed countries consumes approximately 10 to 12 grams of common salt every day. Most of this comes from processed foods such as prepared meals, snacks and meat products.
23/11/07 As consumers become increasingly health conscious, the reduction of common salt consumption is becoming more and more important in the food and beverage industry. With SaltTrim, WILD Flavors, Inc. - WILD's facility in the USA - is unveiling for the first time in Europe a flavorful revolution for the reduction of common salt in food and beverages.
A resident in the western developed countries consumes approximately 10 to 12 grams of common salt every day. Most of this comes from processed foods such as prepared meals, snacks and meat products. However, there is an increasing consensus in the scientific community that consuming less salt can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. The regulatory health organizations in different countries have now reacted and set recommended maximum limits for salt consumption. The first manufacturers from the food industry have already reduced the level of common salt in their products.
SaltTrim offers maximum taste - with less salt Up until now, the reduction of the salt content was opposed with the argument that the products would have to suffer in terms of taste and thus would become less accepted on the market. Thanks to intensive research, WILD Flavors, Inc. has succeeded in finding a remedy for this: SaltTrim is based on a unique technology which enables existing formulations to use the combination of up to 50 percent less common salt and the addition of potassium chloride or other low sodium salts - while at the same time not impairing the taste and mouthfeel of the product.
WILD offers SaltTrim in water-soluble powder form and this means it is easy for the manufacturers to process it further. The effect of SaltTrim is preserved in various applications in the food industry even with exposure to heat. WILD's portfolio contains different versions of SaltTrim which can be declared as flavor or natural flavor. SaltTrim is also allergen free.
SaltTrim is suitable for use in all segments of the food industry. In particular, deep-frozen dishes and tinned food, but also soups, sauces and salad dressings benefit from the reduced common salt content without changing the taste. In addition SaltTrim offers the possibility of substantially reducing the high salt content in salty snacks, popcorn, bread and cereals as well as tomato juice.
WILD is supporting the food manufacturers in their efforts to launch on the market products which are as natural as possible and contribute to a balanced diet. With SaltTrim, the industry will once again do justice to this requirement. WILD Flavors, Inc. has already found SaltTrim to be completely satisfactory on the US market and now also offers the product for the European market.
Wild’s announcement came as the UK Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) reported that average salt level of ready meals on sale in UK supermarkets has reduced by 45% over the last four years. In fact 84% have already reached the Food Standards Agency’s 2010 targets for salt content.
(CASH) surveyed 101 ready meals from eight retailers and found that the average salt content was 1.8g of salt per serving. When the Food Standards Agency surveyed ready meals in June 2003, it found that the average salt content was 3.3g, with some ready meals containing almost all of an adult’s recommended maximum daily amount in a single serving .
Only 13% of the sample taken in 2003 contained 2g of salt or less per serving – a third of an adult’s maximum daily amount. The new research found 66% (67) of ready meals surveyed had 2g or less. Several (16, 16%) of the meals in the survey contained 1g or less of salt per portion.
