Sustainable Packaging with Superfos - for Food and Climate

One of Superfos’ innovative products is SuperLock. It is a great example of a packaging which combines a long shelf life with a very light carbon footprint.

17 Dec 2009 --- Today, the consumers of food products want packaging that is environmentally friendly and at the same time provides for a high standard of food safety. Thinner and lighter packaging offers these two paramount features.

“Contemporary packaging has become excessive”. This attitude can be found among the majority of consumers in 15 countries, according to a fresh survey, “Consumer Perspectives and Product Opportunities”. Consumers care about their own carbon footprint. The new trend represents a major challenge for various industries. The reaction from an increasing number of retailers and food manufacturers is to put environmental issues above traditional criteria for choosing the right packaging.

However, there is no need to compromise. New and innovative product lines from Superfos are both sustainable and offer long shelf life for your food products. And they look great, too.

All the arguments you need

One of Superfos’ innovative products is SuperLock. It is a great example of a packaging which combines a long shelf life with a very light carbon footprint. With SuperLock you get all the arguments at hand when the consumers of your products are concerned about CO2 -emissions and excessive packaging. We are at the forefront of market developments.

In Cologne, Germany, Stefan Foitlinski, Regional Sales Director in Germany gave a speech at the 4th International Thin Wall Packaging Conference arranged by Ami Plastics in October this year. He addressed environmental aspects of plastics packaging, cost reduction and product enhancement and visibility.  ‘Plastic packaging in a changing world - smaller, thinner, more economical and sustainable’

Stay fresh

SuperLock is part of the changing world. It is a thinner packaging that comes with a new oxygen barrier. Results from the Superfos Research and Development Laboratory show that the oxygen barrier increases shelf life for foods with up to two and three times compared to a reference packaging without oxygen barrier. This makes it an excellent choice for consumers, retailers and food manufacturers.

Low carbon emission

Further, thin walled and lighter packaging minimizes the need for raw materials, and it reduces transportation costs as well as the need for warehouse space. It is cost-effective and generates only low carbon emission. This makes it an excellent choice for environmentally conscious consumers – and food producers alike.

What do we do?

As Europe’s largest manufacturer of injection moulded plastic packaging, we are committed to sustainability in the entire supply chain. We aim at minimizing the need for virgin material, we keep on looking for weight reduction and we reduce transportation cost – both our own and our customers. With our carefully developed CO2 -Calculator, leaning on the independent British organisation Carbon Trust, we measure our own environmental impact, and measurements show that the efforts to reduce our carbon footprint are successful.

To respond to the market, big retailers and food producers use sustainability in their branding. So are we, as your customers are our customers, when all comes to all.
