Sustainable Certification Opens North American Soy to Europe
With the majority of soy imported into Europe coming from Argentina and Brazil, the availability of third party independently certificated soy from North America is a significant benefit to European buyers, concerned with the lack of availability of such raw ingredients, in particular those involved in the food sector.
29 May 2012 --- Thousands of tonnes of sustainably sourced, non GM soybeans grown in North America are now available for shipping to Europe following ProTerra Sustainability Certification of Lang Farms, one of Canada’s largest Non GMO soy growers and Manna International, exporter to the European food.
With the majority of soy imported into Europe coming from Argentina and Brazil, the availability of third party independently certificated soy from North America is a significant benefit to European buyers, concerned with the lack of availability of such raw ingredients, in particular those involved in the food sector.
Lang Farms already has Cert ID Non GMO certification and is registered with iSYS. They consider the addition of ProTerra Chain of Custody as indicative of the way the supply chain is moving, as Tony Lang of Lang Farms explains:
“The European food industry recognises the benefits of non-GMO, sustainably farmed soybeans so the fact that Lang Farms is now able to offer thousands of tonnes of soybeans from Canada, verified with ProTerra Certification is a real opportunity. We began with traceability, then non-GM certification and now sustainability, to complete the circle and give the food industry – where sustainability is increasingly important – reassurance that they are purchasing the highest quality, ethically sourced and environmentally responsible ingredients.”
Gerry Fowler from Manna adds: “We see sustainability as both an emerging and a further defining issue of quality, particularly in Western European markets and we want to stay at the forefront of this development in North America”.
The ProTerra Chain of Custody Certification scheme means that soy grown by Lang Farms can be traced back to a sustainable source and each delivery is accompanied by a ProTerra Chain of Custody Certificate (CCC) through Manna International.
