27/03/06 Solo GI(TM) Nutrition, Inc. introduced the first low glycemic 100 calorie snack bar, the SoLo Gi(TM) Low Glycemic Snack Bar, at the $36 billion natural products industry's premier trade show, Natural Products Expo West. A recent AC Nielsen report shows that low glycemic foods will be the top choice for consumers looking to improve their health this year. Glycemic index (GI) is a scientific measure of the impact that a food has on blood sugar. Foods with a low glycemic index (GI) release glucose into the bloodstream slowly, providing sustained energy and a feeling of fullness or satiety without the "spike and crash" cycles that occur with highly processed foods. At 100 calories and .88 oz/25g, the new SoLo Gi bar is available in five delicious flavors -- Chocolate Charger, Peanut Power, Mint Mania, Berry Bliss and brand new Lemon Lift. The bars have a very low GI value because they contain a unique blend of slow-release carbohydrates, protein, dietary fat and fiber, plus specially selected vitamins and minerals to support optimal health and energy metabolism. They are also packed with antioxidants to help protect against cell damage, calcium and Vitamin D for bone health, Vitamin B12, folic acid and iron for cell growth, and chromium and zinc to help support glucose tolerance. As with all SoLo Gi products, they contain no sugar alcohols, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils or trans fats.
"Our SoLo Gi Low Glycemic Snack Bars address two significant emerging trends: low glycemic nutrition and 100-calorie portion control snack foods," says Saul Katz, CEO of Solo GI Nutrition. "Low glycemic foods provide more sustained energy and greater satiety for the calories. Because low glycemic nutrition is science based and does not eliminate an entire food group, it is more sensible and sustainable as a trend than the low-carb diet. For the general public, following a low GI diet regimen helps people maintain their blood sugar and insulin levels to decrease fat storage and weight gain. Once consumers learn that managing blood sugar is key to managing weight, energy and health, they get it for life."
Katz adds that the SoLo Gi snack bar was developed as a response to the consumer trending toward moderation. "People are finally realizing that eating super-sized portions is contributing to rampant health and weight management challenges in this country. Solo GI Nutrition is making it easy for them to get a delicious, filling, 100-calorie low GI snack that is also loaded with antioxidants and other vital nutrients."
The potential benefits of low glycemic nutrition are numerous -- not only weight loss and management, but also a reduction in diabetes, heart attacks and even cancer have all been attributed to low GI diets. A November 24, 2005 article in The Journal of the American Medical Association says that low glycemic diets may make dieters feel less tired, cold and hungry, as well as improve cardiovascular risk factors, and that a reduction in glycemic load may aid in the prevention and treatment of obesity, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Katz adds that Solo GI Nutrition differs from many of the companies jumping on the low GI bandwagon in that its sole function is to develop low GI foods. Solo GI products are clinically-validated by an independent laboratory and all products are the result of extensive scientific research performed by the company's in-house team of scientists.
