Quirky Cactus Water Drink On Shelves At UK Waitrose
19 Jul 2016 --- High-end British grocer Waitrose is sourcing cacti from the Sonoran Desert in Mexico for the latest on-trend drink to hit the shelves.
Cactus Water is now on sale across 70 Waitrose stores and retails at $2.23.
True Nopal Cactus Water is set to be the drink of the summer and follows other trendy plant and tree waters that are now available at Waitrose, including the recent addition of birch water and the ever-popular coconut water.
The nopal cactus thrives in the desert and produces prickly pear, the red spiky fruit from which the water is derived. The juice of the fruit is then pressed and combined with filtered water and a small amount of beetroot juice.
The result is a juice that has a similar taste profile to cranberry juice, but is a little sweeter and it only contained sugar from the cactus puree, making it a low sugar alternative to other juices.
Roxanne Bennett, Drinks to go buyer at Waitrose, says: “Launched two years ago in the USA by entrepreneur Tom Zummo, cactus water is proving popular with the American fashion set. We’re predicting that there will soon be a UK fan base for this quirky drink too.”
