Innova analysis of recent pro- and prebiotic launches.

Probiotic and prebiotic ingredients are being introduced to new products on a more frequent basis, particularly in the dairy sector. Probiotic drinks contain ‘friendly bacteria’ which work naturally to balance existing ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria in the digestive system. Prebiotics stimulate the growth of probiotic bacteria, without encouraging the growth of the bad. Synbiotics combine probiotics and prebiotics.

Innova analysed a number of recent product launches featured in its new products ////database as a means of demonstrating new product activity and pin-pointing upcoming application areas. Innova broke new product launches down into four probiotics categories for its probiotics positioning matrix: Single Serve Yoghurt, Supplements, Dairy Drinks and other foods. Meanwhile a selection of products promoted as being prebiotic was also extracted and placed on the matrix. Exciting products promoted as probiotic include a pineapple and blood orange flavoured yoghurt, available in Austria and smoothie producer, Innocent’s Probiotic Vanilla Bean and Honey flavoured drink in the UK. Earlier this year Bulgarian based Kendy launched its Lactoflor supplement. Noem, which Innova reported is set to launch a private label plant sterol containing drink, recently introduced a strawberry flavoured probiotic drink.

Other exciting launches include Everybody from Glanbia in Ireland and Frumba’s Frum Boost Apple Cranberry and Sunflower Seeds Bar Probiotic Boost. Meanwhile in the field of prebiotics, categories seeing claims now include fruit gums, breakfast cereals, growing up milks, yoghurts and breads.
