Mondelez International Strikes E-Commerce Deal with Alibaba
08 Apr 2016 --- Mondelez International has struck a partnership with Chinese tech giant Alibaba, which will mean that it will begin selling flagship brands such as Oreo and Trident through Alibaba’s Tmall online marketplace.
Mondelez International said it will sell the full range of its products, which also includes Toblerone and Cadbury, as it embarks on a major e-commerce drive in China.
It will also begin to sell tailored products for the Chinese market, kicking off with an Oreo Colorfilled product in May, which will allow consumers to design their own Oreo packaging.
It is joining other well-known brands selling products on Tmall, such as Walmart which recently launched Walmart Global Shop on the marketplace.
Under the partnership, the two companies will team up on consumer insight, cloud computing, brands and advertising solutions, product innovation and expansion of sales and distribution channels.
The move is central to Mondelez targeting at least $1 billion revenues through e-commerce by 2020.
Tim Cofer, chief growth officer at Mondelez International, said: “Snacking is a fast-growing sector for the e-commerce market in China and Alibaba is a powerful partner to help us capture our share of that growth by expanding our distribution channels and improving our brands’ accessibility in both rural and urban Chinese markets.”
Jet Jing, vice president of Alibaba, said: “We look forward to helping Mondelez International fully utilize our e-commerce ecosystem and technology infrastructure to successfully build their brands and effectively reach the 407 million active buyers on our China retail marketplaces who are looking for quality international products that Mondelez International provides.”
