Herma Adds BPA-free Economy Thermal Paper to Its Product Range

For the first time, Herma is offering an economy thermal paper that does not contain any bisphenol.

Mar 14 2012 --- Greater safety in food labelling: following Herma's addition of a BPA-free economy thermal paper to its product range last year, the self-adhesive materials specialist has now gone one step further. For the first time, it is offering an economy thermal paper that is completely free from bisphenol. The label material HERMAtherm BPfree (code 911) is perfect for food weighing applications. It produces very good results when printed with EAN barcodes and other code systems. Print speeds of up to 250 mm/s are possible with direct thermal printing.

"All the expert reports by leading European assessment bodies indicate that bisphenol A in labels does not pose any risk to health," stresses Herma managing director Dr. Thomas Baumgärtner. "Nevertheless, BPA has repeatedly come under scrutiny in other contexts, frequently under the general heading of bisphenol. For this reason we are now using a label material that does not contain any bisphenols at all. This will allow both label printers and label users in the food industry and retail sector in particular to make clear, unambiguous statements and avoid lengthy discussions."

Herma is therefore continuing its strategy of developing and marketing all-purpose self-adhesive materials endowed with added value, in particular as regards their health and environmental credentials. In keeping with this aim, for instance, the company has recently developed particularly low-migration adhesives and has launched a self-adhesive material in which both the label paper and the siliconised liner are made from recycled material. This product received the Blue Angel environmental seal of approval.
