Firmenich Reports Progress in Adoption of White Biotechnology Fermentation Process
25 Feb 2016 --- Building on the successful launch of CLEARWOOD in 2014, Firmenich has announced large-scale production of AMBROX using a White Biotechnology fermentation process, coupled with proprietary green chemistry technology.
Gilbert Ghostine, CEO Firmenich says “Having pioneered white biotechnology for the fragrance industry, with the launch of CLEARWOOD, I am very proud to see that we continue to lead through game-changing innovation with the introduction of a new biotech production process for AMBROX.” “CLEARWOOD won the Sepawa 2015 award for innovation, one of the industry’s most prestigious recognitions in Europe,” explains Geneviève Berger, Firmenich Chief Research Officer.
“This industry recognition, coupled with high customer demand, confirms that our world-class research continues to raise the bar within the industry.” “We are delighted that AMBROX produced from the new biotech process will be on the market in the coming months, further strengthening our position in amber notes,” comments Boet Brinkgreve, President Ingredients, Firmenich.
Firmenich is recognized for its industry-leading commitment to research, as it invests 10% of its turnover annually to drive breakthrough science. Its technology platforms cut across ingredient creation for unique taste and smell experiences; delivery technologies to delight consumers where and when they want; or taste modulation to contribute to healthier diets through reduced sugar, salt or fat levels. The Group’s global research team runs four centers of excellence in Geneva, Switzerland; Princeton, United States; Shanghai, China; and Gujarat, India. Also, it works in close collaboration with a network of open innovation partners, including leading academic institutions worldwide as well as cutting edge start-ups.
A spokesperson for Firmenich told FoodIngredientsFirst that white biotechnology is potentially fully applicable to ingredients for flavor applications and the food industry, but for the time being both Ambrox and Clearwood are dedicated to perfumery applications.
