Concha Y Toro Chosen Winery of The Year 2013
17 Oct 2013 --- Concha y Toro was once again recognized in the Hall of Fame of Wine & Spirits magazine, being chosen “Winery of the Year” by the nineteenth time along with other renowned wineries of the world.
Highlighting some of its most iconic wines, the prestigious U.S. magazine Wine & Spirits once again recognized Concha y Toro as one of the “Top 100 Wineries of the Year 2013”. The award ceremony was held on Tuesday, October 15, in San Francisco, United States, with oenologist Marcelo Papa attending the event on behalf of the company.
Each year, the publication selects the most outstanding wineries around the globe for the quality of its wines, and from 1997 Concha y Toro has been continuously included in the selection. With 19 nominations as ‘Winery of the Year’, the company becomes one of three wineries that lead this global ranking, the Hall of Fame, which is headed by Penfolds winery (Australia) with 23 awards, followed by Concha y Toro (Chile) and Chateau St Michelle (USA), both with 19 nominations.
Isabel Guilisasti, Marketing Director Origin Wines, referred to this distinction as “a sustained appreciation of the quality and enological consistency of our wines, and a corroboration of the continued leadership the company has achieved in the industry in recent years. In Concha y Toro, we have the conviction that great wines are achieved with great terroirs, our icons Don Melchor, Carmín de Peumo and Gravas de Maipo being a good example of this, as well as our outstanding lines Terrunyo, Amelia and Marques de Casa Concha, among others”.
The magazine’s 2013 winter edition highlighted the prolific 2010 season in Chile, stating that “with a cool climate, which allowed the fruit to mature slowly, 2010 delivered some of the best red wines ever produced in the country”.
One of three 2010 vintage wines highlighted by this publication was Terrunyo Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Block Las Terrazas at the Pirque vineyard in Maipo Valley. Patricio Tapia, journalist in charge of evaluating Chilean, Argentinian and Spanish wines for Wine & Spirits, described this wine as fresh, with herbal notes, intense red fruit, and a “spicy character that fills the palate with the strength of the Andean winds”.
Terrunyo Carmenere –born in Block 27 of the Peumo vineyard, in Cachapoal Valley– was one of the wines well appreciated by the journalist, and its 2010 vintage was described as having a fragrant herbal character, subtly nuanced with red fruits and spices. Finally, the wine-taster showed a special preference for the 2010 vintage of iconic Carmenere Carmín de Peumo –which comes from a sector with more clay and less sand than there is in block 27 of the above-mentioned vineyard–, saying that “the ‘colder soils’ and the delicate nature of the 2010 season are behind what is, for me, the best Carmín to date”, and added: “It´s a new dimension for Carmenere, strengthening Concha y Toro´s position at the forefront of Bordeaux varieties in Chile”.
During the last twenty years, Concha y Toro has focused on producing wines for the premium-and-above segment, and has strengthened this effort by having a talented agricultural and enological team, which has been responsible for producing wines of renowned quality in each price segment.
