Cognis also will feature another important ingredient in its heart health portfolio -- Omevital Omega-3 fatty acids, marine-sourced and excellent sources of the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA.

16/10/08 Heart health takes center stage at this year’s SupplySide West as Cognis Nutrition & Health unveils new products and sponsors the show’s featured speaker, Richard Collins, MD, nationally known as “The Cooking Cardiologist”, and a leading authority on preventive medicine.  He is Director of Wellness at the South Denver Heart Center where he educates patients on how to manage heart disease risks through changes in diet and lifestyle.  Wearing his trademark “Whiskoscope” (a stethoscope with a cooking whisk at the end) around his neck, Dr. Collins will discuss the importance of nutrition boosters like Heart Choice natural plant sterols and Omevital Omega-3 fatty acids.

His mission is to win the fight against heart disease by cooking and creating delicious, satisfying foods and he’ll share how he is helping to get Americans on the right track.  From the military to the finest restaurants, from nutritionists to chefs, many are seeking his counsel to find ways to cook healthier without compromising taste. His new recipe book “Cooking with Heart” is much more than a collection of tasty, low-fat recipes; each entry includes complete nutritional analyses and health tips.  In addition to sponsoring his presentation, Cognis invites attendees to get free, autographed copies of his book at Cognis booth 20025 on Oct. 23 from 10:15 am to noon. Featured Presentation:  Thursday, Oct. 23, 9 am – 9:50 am, Marco Polo Room 706 -- Book-signing follows at Cognis booth 20025 from 10:15 am until noon.

Recently, Cognis announced that George Weston Bakeries, Inc. is launching new breads containing Heart Choice natural plant sterols scientifically proven to lower cholesterol and reduce the risks associated with heart disease.  The breads are making their debut nationwide under the widely popular Arnold and Brownberry brands.

New Grains & More Double Oat Hearty Oatmeal Bread was formulated to promote heart health, and each serving contains 0.4 grams of Cognis’ Heart Choice plant sterols. When combined with a healthy diet and exercise, Double Oat Bread may help lower cholesterol up to 15%. Cognis’ Heart Choice logo is prominently displayed on the front package so consumers know that their bread contains a superior source of heart healthy plant sterols.

“Cognis is delighted to be working with George Weston as we build awareness for the heart health benefits of plant sterols,” said Laura Troha, Marketing Manager, Cognis Nutrition & Health.  “Consumers, especially baby boomers, are extremely interested in a natural alternative to help manage their cholesterol. As a result, we are seeing increased interest from major food and supplement manufacturers considering new or improved products with plant sterols.”

Attendees are invited to sample heart healthy treats such as oatmeal craisin cookies and a berry cooler – both with Heart Choice natural plant sterols.

Cognis also will feature another important ingredient in its heart health portfolio -- Omevital Omega-3 fatty acids, marine-sourced and excellent sources of the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA.  The Omevital product line  includes oils with varying concentrations which are easily formulated into a wide range of dietary supplements, functional foods and beverages. The fatty acids EPA and DHA provide significantly more health benefits than plant-based Omega-3 containing only ALA.  In order to be used by the human body, the fatty acid ALA must be converted to EPA and DHA.  Cognis’ Omevital product line delivers all the nutritional value of marine-sourced Omega-3 combined with an award-winning sensory profile.
