Coborn’s Inc Co-Brands with MEG-3
Coborn’s Inc has also signed a trademark license agreement and the MEG-3 brand is prominently featured on their packaging. Coborn’s is a large regional grocery chain with 33 stores in 4 states.
The MEG-3 healthy food ingredient has been added to two varieties of Coborn’s bread, Multi-Grain and Fruit & Nut. Each slice of bread contains 32 mg of EPA/DHA from fish oil.
Research indicates that DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) omega-3 fatty acids are important for good health and normal growth and development. Many studies have shown that DHA plays an essential role in the normal development of the brain, eyes and nerves while EPA provides benefit for joint mobility. Together, EPA and DHA aid in the maintenance of cardiovascular function.
Kim Kockler, a registered dietitian and food safety expert for Coborn’s said, “Scientific studies have shown that EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may provide a number of health benefits. Many of us, however, do not consume the recommended amount of omega-3 fatty acids. By adding EPA and DHA from fish oil to our Multi-Grain and Fruit & Nut breads, we have given consumers another choice to contribute to their intake of omega-3s. The additional benefit with these bread products is that one serving provides at least 11 grams of whole grains, thus contributing to whole grain consumption as well.”
John Schneider, Plant Manager at Coborn’s, Inc. said, “We chose the MEG-3 healthy food ingredient for our breads because it was easy to work with, and it did not change the taste or the smell of our existing products.”
Lori Covert, Vice President of Marketing & Communications at ONC, said, “Coborn’s bread provides consumers with a tasty and convenient way to add to their Omega-3 intake.” Covert continued, “Just by eating two slices of Coborn’s bread, people will receive 64 mg of EPA and DHA from fish oil.”
