Chr. Hansen Launches Natural Blue Colorant
15 Aug 2013 --- Chr. Hansen’s natural colors division launched natural blue for applications in the U.S. confectionary and gum industry. The new natural blue colorant is based on Spirulina, a blue-green algae found in tropical and subtropical lakes.
As consumers continue to search for more natural products, food manufacturers are formulating and reformulating to meet these customers' demands. Colors from natural sources have become increasingly popular to deliver a cleaner, customer-friendly label.
Spirulina has a historic record for applications across various markets. It provides bright vivid blue and green shades, and it can be used for different product types in the confectionary category, including panned candy, chewy candy, jelly gum/gummy candy, extruded candy and chewing gum.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Spirulina to be used as colorant in confectionary applications and chewing gums in the U.S., and the color is in full compliance with federal regulations.
“Consumers have been long awaiting a natural blue and green for the confectionary industry," said Kurt Seagrist, senior vice president of the natural colors division. "Spirulina provides a radiant blue and a foundation for natural green blends."
Chr. Hansen offers six liquid and powder product formulas under the SweetColor™ product line for confectionary and gum applications. The products are safeguarded for micro and bio issues, and they are verified by third party certified auditors.
