Big Bottom Distilling Releases First In-House Distilled Spirit, Oregon Gin
27 Jan 2015 --- Big Bottom Distilling, maker of award-winning Big Bottom Whiskey, is releasing its first distilled product: Big Bottom Oregon Gin. The 91 proof gin retails for $29.95 and debuts as the first of the company’s new line of in-house distilled products being released this year.
Until 2014, Big Bottom has been sourcing all of its whiskey and rum from outside distillers and then blending, finishing and bottling the final product in Hillsboro. Big Bottom decided to move forward with distilling a gin as Founder and Owner Ted Pappas and his new head distiller, Travis Schoney, believe that gin is making a strong comeback in the world of spirits. The availability of different botanicals allows them an opportunity to create a distinctive product that falls outside the range of a traditional gin.
“We are extremely excited to finally be able to distill our own line of spirits,” Schoney said. “It’s very much like a painter with a blank canvas – we have the capability to create extraordinary products with unique and amazing flavor profiles that will appeal to all palates.”
Pappas added: “We chose to distill gin as Big Bottom’s first distilled product because we thought it would allow us to create something uniquely Oregon. We carefully chose a series of botanicals that would offer a flavor profile that best represents the beautiful qualities of Oregon.”
Unlike a traditional London Dry gin, the Big Bottom Oregon Gin is a slightly sweet gin. It contains 16 botanicals that offer a complex bouquet of floral qualities that complement the juniper. It also boasts a rich, full mouth feel with a creamy body offering a long-lasting finish. Because of these qualities, it is a great re-introduction to the spirit of gin – for gin and non-gin drinkers alike.
