Mills cites information published in the March edition of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which reported guidelines for healthy beverage consumption. The report states that of the 98 fluid ounces of liquids that people should consume daily, at least 50% should be pure water. The study concludes that the increasing number of overweight and obese people (16% of all children ages 6 to 19) is directly related to increased daily caloric intake of which approximately 50% comes from calorically sweetened beverages. The study further states that consuming artificially sweetened beverages is not suggested as it serves to make people crave sweet products.
