Watchdog clears tie-up of Napier Brown and James Budgett Sugars
Warn of a lack of competition.
07/02/05 The competition watchdog provisionally cleared the tie-up of two major sugar distributors – but warned of a lack of competition in the UK market.
Sugar-to-nuts company Napier Brown was given the green light to merge with James Budgett Sugars since the overall impact on the market would be “limited”.
The Competition Commission said power would still lie mainly in the hands of the UK’s top two producers, British Sugar and Tate & Lyle.
The UK supply is governed by the EU sugar regime, which involves a system of national quotas that has been criticised for resulting in high prices for consumers and users.
