Solanic BV Potato Protein Isolates Achieve Self-Affirmed GRAS

The SA GRAS status applies to the use of two of its potato protein isolates, in finished food and beverage products and covers multiple food and beverage categories at usage levels between 0.01 to 10%.

23 Mar 2012 --- Solanic BV – an AVEBE Group Company has confirmed, that on March 9th, 2012, it achieved Self Affirmed Generally Recognized as Safe (SA GRAS) status.

From this date, Solanic’s natural potato proteins isolates are legally permitted for sale in the United States under the proposed conditions for use in foods and beverages.

The SA GRAS status applies to the use of two of its potato protein isolates, in finished food and beverage products and covers multiple food and beverage categories at usage levels between 0.01 to 10%.

The SA GRAS Expert Panel said “…The Expert Panel unanimously concludes that the proposed uses of Solanic?s potato protein isolates, meeting appropriate food-grade specifications and manufactured consistent with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), are GRAS based on scientific procedures…”

The SA GRAS Expert Panel consisted of: Dr. Joseph F. Borzelleca, Ph.D. (Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine), Dr. Stephen L. Taylor, Ph.D. (University of Nebraska), and Dr. Paul Pencharz M.B., Ch.B., Ph.D., FRCP(C) (University of Toronto; Hospital for Sick Children): “Solanic’s clean-label potato proteins demonstrate excellent functionality e.g. solubility, foaming, emulsification and gelling and deliver excellent nutritional value. Both potato protein isolates (either high or low iso-electric point), may be used in a wide range of food applications for which Solanic has the appropriate sub-brand and ingredient specification: e.g. bakery products (gluten free); confectionery (meringue); beverages (instant powdered sports nutrition or recovery drinks); (frozen) dairy and non-dairy dessert products (coffee creamer; sorbet, and ‘ice cream’); sauces & dressings (egg-free); processed meat and poultry products; vegetarian food products / meat analogues; wine clarification and grain products including pasta and nutritional bars.
