Smoothie surge credited for rise in UK cranberry sales
As today’s increasingly health-conscious consumers reach for a nutritious, fruit-based drink in place of sugar-filled, carbonated options, sales of the purée have rocketed.
12/01/06 Cranberry purée sales have more than doubled in the UK in the past twelve months, reports Ocean Spray Ingredient Technology Group (ITG).
The soaring popularity of the smoothie is largely responsible for the upsurge. As today’s increasingly health-conscious consumers reach for a nutritious, fruit-based drink in place of sugar-filled, carbonated options, sales of the purée have rocketed.
Commenting on the increase in sales, Arun Hiranandani, senior manager, worldwide marketing for Ocean Spray ITG said, “Cranberry purée is really taking off in Europe and obviously it’s great news. We’re increasing our production capacity in line with the surging demand. The strength of this ingredient lies in its proven health benefits, bright colour and strong flavour. With cranberry purée, manufacturers can add nutritional and sensory value to their products without affecting their natural goodness.”
Ocean Spray said that its cranberry purée product is a popular ingredient for smoothie-type drinks due to its well-documented health benefits, tangy taste and vibrant red colour. Naturally rich in antioxidants and high in fibre, it contains no preservatives or added colours, making it ideal for ‘better for you’ applications. Other products that can benefit from cranberry purée include sauces, yoghurts, dairy desserts and fillings or toppings for bakery applications.
