Sims Launches Acai Berry in UK
Originating from the lower Amazon basin in Brazil, the açai berry has the appearance of a purple grape and the flavour of a tropical berry.
03/02/06 In an exclusive agreement with fruit pulp manufacturer Fruits of the Amazon, J.O. Sims will distribute the açai berry (pronounced Ah-Sigh-Ee) in Europe for the first time. Originating from the lower Amazon basin in Brazil, the açai berry has the appearance of a purple grape and the flavour of a tropical berry. Exported as a frozen fruit pulp, it is also available in various extract formats.
Long used by Indian tribes who consume açai as a staple part of their diet, recent studies show the fruit to possess extremely high levels of anthocyanins - pigments which generate antioxidant activity. The level of anthocyanin present in açai is 30 times greater than that found in red wine, and the resultant antioxidant activity is up to six times greater than blueberries. Also rich in essential fatty acids omega 6 and omega 9, iron, fibre and other vitamins and minerals, this palm berry offers exceptional nutritional value.
Jon Wisniewski, general manager, Fruits of the Amazon, said: "The appointment of J.O. Sims as a partner to bring the açai berry to the UK market is very important. This is a significant milestone on our march to expose other markets to the wealth of natural and functional products from the Amazon."
Commenting on the agreement, Doug Mackay, general manager, ingredients, J.O. Sims, said: "We are delighted to be appointed by Fruits of the Amazon. Our unrivalled knowledge of the UK ingredients market and extensive customer base means we are well positioned to introduce food and drink manufacturers to the benefits of using this exotic, healthy fruit."
