07 Mar 2013 --- Saku Brewery introduced its new Home Beer, as a pursuit to enrich its selection of beers and to honour the historic Estonian beer brewing traditions.
The main characteristic of the Home Beer is its taste, which differs a great deal from that of a classic lager beer. Home beer is sweeter, has a much richer taste and there is almost no bitterness of the hop. Because home beer is never being filtered, this is also the case with Saku Home Beer, which makes the drink foggy and its taste even rounder. In the production of this beer surface fermentation yeast has been used (the usual lager beer is made with bottom fermentation yeast), which is like the bakery yeast used in home cooking.
Tarmo Tappo, the head brewer of Saku Brewery said, that the news about a large manufacturer like Saku brewing Home Beer, could come as a surprise to quite a few beer-lovers. „By creating the Home Beer, we want to widen our selection of beers and offer something new, which might even be something old and forgotten to somebody. We also maintain an awareness of the fact, that in Estonia people have always brewed their own home beer,“ he said. „When creating the recipe for the Home Beer, we gathered knowledge and practices from different places in Estonia, that belong to home brewing. The result is Saku’s version of home beer, which takes into consideration the taste characteristics of such beer,“ said Tappo. Tappo added that products with home recipes have entered even to other food industries lately. „These products – may it be bread or beer or something else – complement each other. Maybe it’s some kind of a time signal, which makes us honour worthy old things“, he mentioned.
Saku Home Beer is 4,8% of alcohol strength, homebrewed beer of old Estonian farms used to be somewhat stronger even.
Saku Home Beer will gradually be available in stores from mid March.
Saku Brewery with its 192-year old history is Estonian oldest and largest beer manufacturer. Saku’s goal is to offer its consumers nice refreshment and new experiences with its high-quality drinks.
