New Water Treatment Systems from Norland
Norland Int’l. Inc. has introduced three new systems for quality water treatment designed specifically for the bottled water industry.
12/05/06 Lincoln, NE USA—Norland Int’l. Inc. has introduced three new systems for quality water treatment designed specifically for the bottled water industry: A standard water treatment system for basic water treatment needs; a spring water treatment system for use by bottlers drawing their source water from springs, wells, boreholes and other sources; and powerful, efficient ozone injection systems.
Standard Water Treatment System
The system utilizes an ion exchange water softener and a variety of filtration methods custom-engineered to meet local water conditions and flow rate requirements.
The systems utilize activated carbon filtration to remove chlorine, bad tastes and odors from the feed water. The automatic water softeners are designed for light commercial and industrial applications. Since they are designed to deliver a continuous, uninterrupted supply of softened water, they are ideally suited to treat the feed water before the distillation or reverse osmosis purification process is implemented.
The softener is a twin resin tank with a single brine tank and control valve. One tank is always in service while the second is in the stand-by or regeneration mode, assuring a constant supply of softened water. This feature lowers operating costs and reduces salt and water consumption.

Spring Water Pre-Treatment Systems
Norland’s offers a new pretreatment system for source waters from spring, well, borehole and other sources.
Because source water contaminants vary significantly from location to location, Norland custom-designs these premium pretreatment systems to meet the requirements of each of its customers.
The standard platform-mounted SWPT15 system configuration uses a spin filter to remove particulate matter down to 100 microns. A multimedia filter further removes particulate matter to 20 microns, and a DGD 25/1 micron cartridge filter then removes particulates to 1 micron nominal. The SWPT15 treats up to 15 gallons per minute. Larger customized SWPT systems are designed to treat up to 100 gallons of source water per minute.
"It’s critical that bottled water operations use pre-treatment technologies that directly address water conditions and contaminants found in their areas," says Bruce Kucera, Norland vice president. "Our systems can be tailored specifically to their needs."
Norland’s New "Side-stream" Ozone Systems
Two new ozone systems are now available from Norland Int’l. Inc.: the OZ-25SSA, which produces enough ozone to treat up to 25 gallons (95L) per minute, and the OZ-50SSA, which can treat up to 50 gallons (189 L) per minute. Ozone is used in the bottled water industry to kill bacteria and improve the taste of the water.
These compact, platform-mounted systems deliver high ozone production at residual levels of from 0.1-0.4 mg/L. The system utilizes an air-cooled, patented "Cold Spark" Corona Discharge Generator, which allows the production of a high concentration of ozone while generating very little heat. This eliminates the need for additional water-cooling mechanisms for the ozone tubes.
The side-stream technology used in these systems provides effective mixing and mass transfer of the ozone and product water prior to entering the bottle filler.
Both models are designed to meet IBWA-recommended ozone levels in product water.
