New Insights on How to Reduce Household Food Waste
25 Jun 2014 --- The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has welcomed new valuable insights from WRAP on how to reduce household food waste.
The latest report from WRAP highlights that two million tonnes of household food is discarded because it is not 'used in time' and highlights how spreading best practice between food categories can lead to significant waste reductions.
FDF is a strong supporter of WRAP's Love Food Hate Waste campaign and helped develop its Fresher for Longer initiative launched last year to help consumers make better use of packaging and the information it carries to reduce avoidable food waste at home.
FDF members have also contributed to the achievements so far under the first two phases of the Courtauld Commitment Phase and are supporting the work under Courtauld 3, including the target to reduce household food waste by 5% by 2015 based on 2012. In particular, food and drink manufacturers have made significant innovations around packaging design and providing information about product storage and use.

Melanie Leech, Director General, Food and Drink Federation said: “Throwing away food that is not used in time is an avoidable and expensive form of waste, both for consumers and the environment. As manufacturers, we want consumers to get the most out of the products they buy, whilst ensuring food remains safe to eat. This is why we will continue to work with WRAP, retailers and other supply chain partners to build on the substantial progress that has already been made and help address the challenges that remain.”
