life'sDHA Now Featured in Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA in Canada

10/07/07 Martek Biosciences, a DHA omega-3 market leader, announced that WhiteWave Foods, North America's leading manufacturer of soymilk, organic milk and other organic foods, has expanded the launch of Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA with life'sDHA and has made the product available in Canada. Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA with life'sDHA was launched in the U.S. in February 2007.

"We are pleased that the success of Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA with life'sDHA in the U.S. has prompted WhiteWave Foods to expand the product launch to include Canada, providing Canadian consumers with another opportunity to get DHA in their diets through life'sDHA," said Steve Dubin, Martek's CEO.

One of North America's best-selling natural food brands, Silk soy beverage was introduced in Canada in 2000. In Canada, Silk products include refrigerated Silk soy beverage in Plain, Vanilla, Chocolate as well as Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA with life'sDHA and Silk Light. Silk also offers shelf-stable soy beverages in Plain and Vanilla. Silk products can be found in supermarket chains and specialty retailers across Canada.

In 2007 Canada's Food Guide was updated and now includes soy beverages in the milk and alternatives section. The guide recommends Canadians drink 500 mL of milk or fortified soy beverages every day to obtain an adequate amount of vitamin D in their diets.

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) omega-3 is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid that serves as a primary building block for the brain and the eyes and supports brain, eye and cardiovascular health throughout life. There is a large and growing body of scientific evidence demonstrating that people of all ages, from infants to aging adults, benefit from an adequate supply of DHA  omega-3 in their diets. Scientific reviews have noted the importance of DHA omega-3 in proper brain and eye function, and there are studies currently underway to investigate its role in decreasing the prevalence of certain neurological disorders.

Martek's life'sDHA is unique in the market because it is derived from a sustainable and vegetarian source. Made from microalgae under tightly controlled manufacturing conditions, life'sDHA is free of oceanic contaminants that may be present in certain fish or fish oils. Microalgae are the only vegetarian source of DHA omega-3, the key omega-3 for brain and eye development and function.
