Home Grown Wine Thrives At Waitrose
The increase compared to last year shows the continuing support that Waitrose customers have for the English wine industry which continues to develop and produce new award-winning sparkling and still wines. Waitrose offers its customers the widest selection of English and Welsh wines in the UK with a 70 per cent market share from over 50 different vineyards across 20 counties.
Specifically, still English wines are up 14 per cent year on year at Waitrose and shoppers are often choosing English sparkling wine over its French and Italian rivals, with sales up 12 per cent compared to 2015.
Earlier this year Waitrose announced its continued investment in English wine, as the supermarket expanded its already extensive range to offer customers over 100 different English and Welsh wines; introducing 12 new English sparkling wines to the range.
Waitrose wine buyer Becky Hull, MW says: ‘We’re proud to stock the widest range of English wine in a supermarket. We continue to introduce wines from new English vineyards for our customers to experiment and enjoy. English Wine Week is important to mark the growing industry and many of the English wines we stock come from small beginnings, so we are really proud to be so closely involved in the English wine industry at such an exciting time.’
Anja Nolan, Managing Director of the family run Black Dog Hill Vineyard in Westmeston near Ditchling in the South Downs comments; “This year has seen our award- Black Dog Hill Classic Cuvée 2011 launch on WaitroseCellar.com, meaning that more people than ever can taste our delicious, home grown fizz - a gold medal winner at the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competition. We’re excited to now be working closely with Waitrose who are a true champion for the English wine industry.”
The new additions to the range also included an ice wine from Nottinghamshire, fizzes from Buckinghamshire and Herefordshire and a white from Staffordshire. Waitrose also introduced the new Leckford Brut 2013 vintage fizz which is from the supermarket's own vineyard in Hampshire.
