Following the increased number of number of food safety scares worldwide, a consortium of international retailers identified the need to enhance food safety, ensure consumer protection and strengthen consumer confidence. The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) was subsequently launched, setting requirements for food safety schemes through a benchmarking process in order to improve consumer protection and cost efficiency throughout the food supply chain.
To further strengthen the move toward greater protection, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) developed and introduced the BRC Food Technical Standard (www.brcglobalstandards.com) to be used to evaluate manufacturers of retailers private brand food products. It is designed to assist retailers and brand owners in producing food products of consistent safety and quality and assist ingredient suppliers pursuing due diligence in their production methodology.
“BRC certification ensures food safety and high quality while setting unified standards for food and beverage manufacturers. It is on track to become the main paradigm for food safety in the near future,” explains Ronny Hacham, Vice President of Business Development & Marketing for Gadot. "Manufacturers remain highly concerned about food safety, especially considering recent problems with food and beverage recalls both in the US and Europe.”
Gadot has embraced these efforts and applied them to its processing of citric acid and sodium citrate, granting the highest possible grade — A — and is on track to rapidly expand the certification to other product lines,” says Hacham.
