FSANZ Invites Call Submissions on Food Derived From Herbicide-Tolerant Cotton Line
19 Mar 2014 --- Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has invited submissions on an application to permit food derived from a genetically modified cotton line.
FSANZ Chief Executive Officer Steve McCutcheon said the application, from Dow AgroSciences Australia Pty Ltd, sought approval for food derived from a herbicide-tolerant cotton line.
“The cotton has been genetically modified to tolerate the herbicides 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and glufosinate ammonium,” Mr McCutcheon said.
“Our safety assessment found no public health or safety concerns, and concluded that food derived from this cotton line is as safe for human consumption as food derived from conventional cotton cultivars,” Mr McCutcheon said.
“FSANZ welcomes comments from government agencies, public health professionals, industry and the community.”
The closing date for submissions is 29 April 2014.
