Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods to roll-out products bearing official 'Whole Grains Stamp'

25/02/05 The United States, Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods, the nation's leading manufacturer of unrefined whole grain products, will be first to nationally distribute products with the Whole Grains Council's new "Whole Grains Stamp," a packaging symbol designed to help consumers identify and rate whole grain products at-a-glance. The company plans to debut the stamp on two product packages by mid-March, and will begin implementing the symbol on hundreds more of its products over the coming year.
The Whole Grains Council's new packaging symbol comes on the heels of the recently revised U.S. Dietary Guidelines, which recommend that at least half of Americans' daily grain servings come from whole grain foods -- a minimum of three one-ounce servings a day. The stamp aims to help consumers discern the best sources of whole grains, since nutrition labels do not clearly disclose the amount of whole grains contained in a product. Three versions of the symbol will indicate the level of whole-grain content: 100 Percent Excellent Source (product contains at least 16 grams of whole grain per labeled serving and no refined grain); Excellent Source (product contains at least 16 grams of whole grain per labeled serving); and Good Source (product contains at least 8 grams of whole grain per labeled serving).
The Whole Grains Council is a consortium of industry, scientists and chefs working with Oldways Preservation Trust to increase consumption of whole grains for better health. The Council's many initiatives help manufacturers to create delicious whole grain products; help consumers to find whole grain foods and understand their health benefits; and help the media to write accurate, compelling stories about whole grains.
