BASF plans to cease production of vitamin C

19/12/05 BASF is to cease production of vitamin C in Grenaa, Denmark, at the end of 2005. The site, at which the company operates a vitamin C facility with an annual capacity of 4,000 metric tons, is no longer competitive due to the low capacity of the plant and the continuous decline in prices for vitamin C as a result of overcapacities.

Currently, BASF employs 77 people at the Grenaa site. "We are aware of our social responsibility and have already reached agreements on educational programs as well as compensation packages with our employees," said Wolfgang Müller, head of BASF Health & Nutrition A/S in Denmark.

The company's activities at its Ballerup site will not be affected by the closure. Here, BASF primarily manufactures powder formulations of vitamins and carotenoids as well as other microencapsulated in-gredients primarily for the food industry.
