White Port Is The New Top Tipple For Summer
White port is poised to be the tipple of the summer according to Waitrose, with the supermarket revealing that sales of the Portuguese fortified white wine are up by 25 per cent compared to 2015. While red port is traditionally the more well-known type of port its drier, more bittersweet cousin, white port, has been gradually increasing in popularity as a new option for summertime cocktails.
The trend to use white port in cocktails originated in the Porto region of Portugal and has spread to include top cocktail bars and restaurants in America and in London, such as Sketch and Soho House in London.
Nick Room Wine Buyer at Waitrose comments; “White port is a wonderful alternative aperitif to a Pimms or a gin and tonic this summer. Simply serve chilled with tonic or lemonade and plenty of ice, and garnish with a slice of lemon and a sprig of fresh mint. It’s definitely a cocktail to impress guests with this summer!”
White Port is made from white grapes, and comes in two styles; dry and sweet. Sweet port is the traditional style of white port which is very rich with a strong grape taste. Once the white wine has been made it is then fortified with the addition of a neutral grape spirit called Aguardente. This stops the fermentation, leaving residual sugar in the wine resulting in a delicious white port
