US Peanut Company Extends Recall
The US authorities have now reported 529 cases of illness from Salmonella Typhimurium in 43 US states. US officials are currently investigating the source, but the outbreak is thought to be linked to peanut butter products.
02/02/09 The Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) has updated its recall of peanut products in the wake of the salmonella outbreak in the United States. The Food Standards Agency is advising consumers not to eat recalled batches of certain American peanut butter products.
PCA has extended the recall of its peanut products to all products processed at its Blakely, Georgia, facility since 1 January 2007. This includes all peanuts (dry and oil roasted), granulated peanuts, peanut meal, peanut butter and peanut paste. All lots that are affected begin with the lot number 7, 8 or 9.
Products affected by PCA extended recall
• Peanut Butter: All Styles All Sizes All lots beginning with 7, 8, or 9
• Peanut Paste: All Styles All Sizes All lots beginning with 7,8, or 9
• Peanut Meal: All Styles All Sizes All lots beginning with 7, 8, or 9
• Peanut Granules: All Styles All Sizes All lots beginning with 7, 8 or 9
• Peanuts: All Styles All Sizes All lots beginning with 7, 8 or 9
PCA is not aware of any complaints or reports of illness involving the additional peanuts and peanut products subject to this expanded recall, but is taking this action on a precautionary basis.
PCA sells its products to institutional and industrial users for service in large institutions or for sale and further processing by other companies. PCA does not sell peanuts or peanut products directly to consumers in stores.

As a precautionary measure, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week recalled a range of peanut butter and paste products.
Consumers are advised not to eat the affected products and to check the FDA and CFIA websites for the list of foods recalled.
