Tereos Reports Significant Progress in CSR Strategy
23 Dec 2015 --- Tereos has published its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report, which outlines the significant improvements made in 2015 by the Group in terms of sustainable development, focusing on five strategic pillars: sustainable agriculture, positive logistics and industry, product guarantees, local development, and nutrition & health.
By bringing CSR into the heart of its strategy, Tereos reasserts its commitment to being a responsible player. “Contributing to the company's long-term performance while reinforcing our current and future contribution as a responsible player – such is our commitment in terms of social and environmental responsibility. The strength of our cooperative model also enables us to secure the commitment of farmers and employees, and thus provide an overall view of the sector's sustainability”, states Chief Executive Officer Alexis Duval.
The 5 pillars of the CSR strategy of Tereos underpin the Group’s agricultural, industrial and commercial activities. As shown by the key figures and initiatives below, Tereos CSR strategy encompasses its entire value chain:
Tereos is committed to sustainable agricultural practices through recognized sustainability certificates like SAI (Sustainable Agriculture Initiative), Bonsucro, ISCC and 2BSvs. In 2015, 8 million tonnes of raw materials were certified as sustainable.
50% of the power used by the Group's facilities comes from renewable sources. Among them, we can quote the production of bioelectricity or biogas from agricultural residues. In 2015, Tereos processed in Brazil 1000 GWH of bioelectricity from sugar cane.
Tereos also launched a vast energy saving program in 2012 to reduce the CO2 emissions of its French sugar beet plants by 20% by 2017.
Tereos and Eco-PGS have developed a wooden pallet featuring and eco-design. The wood savings generated represent a raw material gain equivalent to 7,500 trees per year. In Brazil, under the "Reflorestar" project, Guarani supports reforestation in the municipalities around its facilities by supplying them with saplings produced in its nurseries.
Tereos assists its customers in the development of new recipes aimed at continuously improving the nutritious values of foods. In 2014-2015, Tereos carried out 72 nutritional improvement projects with its customers.
