27/04/09 As of January 1st 2009, Prof. Dr. Marc J.E.C. van der Maarel has joined the Food Innovation Centre of AVEBE U.A. as Manager Product and Application Development.
AVEBE is the world market leader in the production of potato starch and derivatives.
Prof. van der Maarel is connected as honorary professor in carbohydrate bioprocessing to the Microbial Physiology research group of the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB), University of Groningen. The academic research interest of Prof. van der Maarel is the enzymatic and microbial conversion of carbohydrates such as starch and the use of such products in food applications.
M.J.E.C. van der Maarel (1968) has a MSc degree in Applied Biology from the University of Nijmegen and a PhD degree in Microbial Physiology from the University of Groningen. His PhD thesis entitled “Anaerobic microbial degradation of methylated sulphur compounds” was awarded in 1997 with the Promotionspreiss of the German Society for General and Applied Microbiology.
From 1995 to 1999 van der Maarel was active as assistant professor with the research group Microbial Ecology of the University of Groningen.
During the period 1999-2008 he was a senior research scientist and project manager with the contract research organization TNO Quality of Life.
