Perfect Day allies with Onego Bio to speed-up launch of animal-free eggs

21 Sep 2022 --- US-based Perfect Day, is partnering with Onego Bio, which specializes in creating animal-free eggs, aiming to accelerate the timeline to bring the eggs to the market. The business, with the use of its technology, plans to commercialize animal-free ovalbumin, the most abundant egg white protein extracted through precision fermentation.

Perfect Day will bring to the table its strain engineering, bioprocess development, regulatory support and scale-up process services as the demand for eggs is insatiable, as global egg production has doubled its volume in the past 20 years and is forecasted to reach 138 million metric tons by 2030, according to the company.

“We believe their animal-free egg white products will play a significant role in transforming our food chain,” says Ryan Pandya, Perfect Day co-founder and CEO.

Alternative alliance
Onego Bio, which uses the same microflora platform used for Perfect Day’s alternative whey, aims to launch its first product called Bioalbumen in the US as a food ingredient for the bakery segment and the confectionary industry as well as a protein supplement for fitness products.

To produce natural milk protein, Perfect Day and Onega Bio teams teach tiny organisms, or “microflora,” to create the milk protein by giving the digital version of the milk-making genetic blueprint of a cow to the flora.

Perfect Day, earlier this year, opened a new facility in Utah to grow in the biotech space and continue its expansion efforts.An ISO compliant, third-party reviewed life cycle assessment (LCA) found that Perfect Day’s whey protein reduces blue water consumption by up to 99%, greenhouse gas emissions by up to 97% and non-renewable energy use by up to 60%, compared to conventional production methods, according to Perfect Day.

At a later stage, Onego Bio plans to enter the consumer market with its own branded products for baking and cooking.

The two companies will launch a new enterprise biology business named nth Bio.

“The name nth Bio comes from the exponential impact we stand to have by bringing others along on our journey,” says Ryan Pandya, Perfect Day co-founder and CEO.

“It’s our commitment to creating a kinder, greener tomorrow through collaboration – taken to the nth degree,” he explains.

Perfect Day expansion
The California company earlier this year, opened a new facility in Utah to grow in the biotech space and continue its expansion efforts.

“Perfect Day has produced more animal-free whey protein in the first half of this year than it did in all of 2021 and has unlocked the capacity to produce thousands of metric tons starting next year through its four commercial-scale facilities around the world,” according to the business.

Perfect Day is also expanding in India with a liquidation buy-off of Mumbai-based Sterling Biotech, acquiring two manufacturing plants in Gujarat and another in Tamil Nadu, aiming to reduce production costs and expand into the attractive Asia-Pacific market.

Fermentation-based protein companies secured US$1.7 billion in investments in 2021.
